butter
Butter can be alright in small doses, but finding alternatives for cooking and baking will expand your diet immensely! By using different ingredients instead of butter you feel better about treating yourself to your favorite foods, whether it’s mashed potatoes or your morning muffin. Just make sure you are following the BLOCKS and not eating too much of one macronutrient: one BLOCK has 3 grams of fat, 7 grams of protein, or 9 grams of carbohydrates. Check out our list of three tasty butter alternatives!

  1. Coconut Milk. Miss those creamy, buttery vegetables at dinner? Try cooking them in coconut milk! A little bit goes a long way and you won’t miss that butter one bit. Grab the stuff in the can, not the refrigerated cartons. Try tossing in some cashew butter for a Thai-inspired side dish! Here are 17 recipes that use coconut milk.
  2. Bananas. This fruit makes a great snack, but it’s an even better butter substitute in baked goods. It keeps all sorts of muffins and sweet breads moist without the fat. This banana muffin recipe has no butter, or even oil, in sight!
  3. Greek Yogurt. This protein-packed butter substitute is very versatile; it can be used in everything from baked goods to salad dressings. We found an awesome Fettuccine Alfredo recipe that is delicious using Greek yogurt instead of butter!
